Exploring the theme from our previous musical wind sculpture “The Windsong Tree I, Erik and I made this tree by weaving steel strands of varying diameter and applying a rapid rusting treatment to it to bring out the lovely oxidization colors from the metal. We increased the number of copper spheres to fourteen and this time, we lacquered them to keep the red/gold color vibrant as a contrast to the steel. The Windsong Tree as a whole is tuned to produce an F major chord if all the spheres are activated by the wind simultaneously. In practice, the larger spheres resonate first in the slowest breeze with the other ones needing a stiffer breeze to activate as they get progressively smaller, although some of the different sizes overlap in their ranges. The largest sphere is eight inches diameter and the smallest is four inches.
